Buying motorcycle clothing: the range in Zurich

If you want to buy motorcycle clothing, you will find leather or textile jackets with CE-certified protectors at the shoulders and elbows and a pocket for a back protector. The trousers in touring, sport or jeans versions have protectors at the knees and hips, and some can be zipped to the jacket.

There are also one- and two-piece suits in leather or textile, gloves for summer and winter in short and long versions, and boots for touring, sport, adventure and the city. Rainwear, back protectors, kidney belts and airbag vests such as the Alpinestars Tech-Air complete the range.

In the shop, you will find brands such as Alpinestars, Arai and Kenny as well as the in-house Honda Dream Dealer Zürich line. Other brands are available on request.

Buying a motorcycle helmet: full-face, flip-up, open-face or motocross

The full-face helmet encloses the head and chin and suits sport, touring and motorway riding. On a flip-up helmet, the chin bar can be raised, which touring riders appreciate during breaks. The open-face jet helmet is light and airy and suits scooters and retro motorcycles.

For motocross and enduro, there is the motocross helmet with a peak and a chin bar that extends far forward; it is worn with goggles. In the shop, there are helmets from Arai and Alpinestars, and other brands can usually be obtained at short notice.

Helmets are compulsory in Switzerland. If you want to buy a motorcycle helmet, look for the approval label to the ECE 22.06 standard.

Fit and protection levels of protective clothing

The fit varies from brand to brand, which is why it is worth trying things on in the shop. For helmets, the team measures your head circumference and checks the fit, and for jackets and trousers it advises you on size and protection level.

For protectors, the dealer recommends CE-certified parts. Level 1 stands for basic protection, Level 2 for the highest protection level. In Switzerland, only the helmet is required by law, but full protective gear is nevertheless strongly recommended.

Renting motorcycle clothing: set or individual items

If you only ride now and then or take a rental motorcycle, you can hire the gear. Helmet, jacket, trousers and gloves are available as a complete set, which becomes cheaper from the second day and is offered as a weekly flat rate for up to seven days. Individual items can also be rented.

The rental gear comes from Alpinestars. Jackets and trousers are available from XS to 3XL, gloves from S to 3XL and helmets from XS to XXL, with women's sizes on request. For a test ride of 15 to 25 minutes, you can also rent just a helmet.

For hygiene reasons, a balaclava is mandatory with every helmet rental: either bring your own or purchase one at the shop. A deposit is required for the gear, and if you also want to rent a motorcycle, you pay a separate vehicle deposit for it. Damaged or lost items are charged at replacement value.

Advice, reservation and collection

For advice and fitting, it is best to arrange an appointment in advance, as the shop is fully booked when it is busy. The appointment is fixed as soon as the dealer confirms it. You reserve rental gear via the online form and collect it in Zurich.

The gear can be combined with a rental motorcycle or rented separately, for example for your own motorcycle or a course. At the MX-Academy, where you learn to ride a motorcycle without a driving licence on closed-off grounds, the protective gear is already included in the taster course as well as in the complete packages.

Frequently asked questions: Motorcycle clothing

Which motorcycle clothing is mandatory in Switzerland?

Only the helmet is required by law. The dealer nevertheless recommends full protective gear with jacket, trousers, gloves and boots, ideally with CE-certified protectors.

What helmet size do I need?

Measure your head circumference about one centimetre above your eyebrows. Sizes range from XS for 53 to 54 cm to XXL for 63 to 64 cm. As every brand fits differently, trying it on in the shop is the surest way to the right helmet.

Can I rent motorcycle clothing instead of buying it?

Yes. If you want to rent motorcycle clothing, you get helmet, jacket, trousers and gloves as a complete set or individually, by the day or at a weekly flat rate. A balaclava is mandatory with every helmet rental, either your own or bought on site. The reservation is made online and becomes binding with the dealer's confirmation.

When should a motorcycle helmet be replaced?

After every fall or hard impact, even if no damage is visible on the outside. Otherwise, the manufacturer's recommendations apply.

Is there motorcycle clothing for women and children?

Yes. Women's clothing has its own cuts, and the team advises you on women's sizes. For children, there is equipment designed for kids motocross from the age of 4. Women's sizes are also available on request for the rental gear.
