Honda Enduro Motorcycle: Off-Road Motorcycles for Road and Competition

What defines an enduro

Enduros are light off-road motorcycles with long suspension travel, knobbly tyres and a slim silhouette. Road enduros such as the CRF300L are road-legal and are suitable for gravel roads as well as for everyday use in town.

Competition enduros such as the CRF450RX and CRF250RX are based on the motocross models but adapted for off-road use. A supermoto is the counterpart for tarmac: an off-road motorcycle designed for the road.

Choosing an off-road motorcycle: registration, licence and experience

With restricted category A – commonly known as A2 in EU countries – you can ride the CRF300L and CRF300 Rally. The CRF450RX and CRF250RX, on the other hand, are pure competition motorcycles without road registration, built for track and off-road. For the enduro and supermoto versions by RedMoto, the category stated in the vehicle registration document applies; the dealer can tell you more.

Which enduro motorcycle suits you depends heavily on weight and riding skills off-road. The CRF300L and CRF300 Rally are accessible entry models with a moderate power output of 20.1 kW. According to dealer data, the competition models are even lighter, but require considerably more experience.

Competition models are built for racing; when buying, ask for advice on maintenance and service.

The Honda enduros at a glance

The CRF300L (286 cc, 20.1 kW) combines slim proportions, agile steering and comfortable suspension with road registration. The CRF300 Rally, with the same displacement and power, holds 12.8 litres of fuel and is therefore suited to longer stages.

The CRF450RX (449 cc) is the competition enduro based on the CRF450R, the CRF250RX (249 cc, 8-litre tank) the lighter counterpart based on the CRF250R.

With the Honda CRF RX Enduro by RedMoto, three engine sizes are available – CRF250RX, CRF300RX and CRF450RX Enduro, each also as a Special – plus the CRF450RX Rally with a 36-litre tank. According to dealer data, the CRF300RX Enduro has 296 cc and 11.3 kW. The CRF450RX Supermoto by RedMoto, with 449 cc and 16.7 kW, is designed for tarmac.

Technology and equipment for off-road riding

On loose surfaces you usually ride standing on the footpegs, looking far ahead, and apply throttle, clutch and brakes with a fine touch. The equipment consists of helmet, goggles, boots, gloves and protectors, plus water and tools on longer tours.

With the road enduros, the main differences are tank and speed: according to dealer data, the CRF300L reaches 132 km/h and holds 7.8 litres, the CRF300 Rally 135 km/h. Depending on displacement, the enduro versions by RedMoto deliver around 10 to 12.9 kW; the CRF300RX Enduro reaches 114 km/h, the CRF450RX Rally 119 km/h.

Learning to ride enduro: training and test ride

Off-road, technique counts for more than power. The MX-Academy enduro training sessions are available for beginners and advanced riders, with your own enduro or as a complete package with a rental bike; groups are formed according to riding ability. For riders of large adventure tourers there is also a dedicated off-road motorcycle safety training. Registration is online in the MX-Academy calendar, payment is made on site.

For a test ride on a road enduro and advice on the RedMoto versions, Honda Motorrad Zürich is the right place to go, as it is for leasing and workshop services.
