Youth motocross on the Honda CRF150R: technology and use

The Honda CRF150R is a motocross competition bike for teenagers. According to Honda, its technology is based on the larger CRF250R and CRF450R models, and the high, wide handlebar suits smaller hands.

  • 149 cc four-stroke, liquid-cooled, Unicam cylinder head
  • Close-ratio five-speed gearbox
  • Fully adjustable 37 mm Showa upside-down fork
  • Wheels: 19 inches front, 16 inches rear
  • Disc brakes: 220 mm front, 190 mm rear
  • Seat height 866 mm

Character: a small motocross bike for competition

The CRF150R is designed for racing. The engine has little rotating mass, responds directly to the throttle and makes the motorcycle very agile. Riding the CRF150R properly therefore already requires advanced riding skills.

The CRF150R has no road approval, as it is designed as a competition motorcycle for track and terrain. The suspension also copes with bigger jumps, making it suitable for training and racing on demanding tracks.

Engine and gearbox of the 150

The liquid-cooled 149 cc four-stroke engine has a Unicam cylinder head with a single camshaft. Gears are changed manually via a close-ratio five-speed gearbox with a clutch lever.

A light-action throttle and the motocross handlebar with half-waffle grips are tailored to young riders.

Suspension, wheels and brakes

At the front is a fully adjustable 37 mm Showa upside-down fork with long travel, at the rear a Pro-Link swingarm with a Showa shock. The frame is a lightweight tubular steel frame.

The wheels measure 19 inches at the front and 16 inches at the rear, the axles 15 and 17 mm. Braking is hydraulic, with 220 mm discs at the front and 190 mm at the rear. The seat height is 866 mm.

Who is the CRF150R right for?

As a guideline, the starting age is around 11 to 12; the model is designed for teenagers up to around 16. Newcomers are better off learning to use the clutch and shift gears on the forgiving CRF125F first and then moving up to the CRF150R.

The step up from the CRF125F shows above all in the technology: instead of air cooling, a telescopic fork and a rear drum brake, the CRF150R offers liquid cooling, a fully adjustable upside-down fork and hydraulic disc brakes on both wheels. Alongside age, also consider your child's height and skills.
